Implements of Agriculture
An implement of agriculture is a self-propelled or towed vehicle that is designed or adapted for use in agricultural, horticultural, or livestock-raising operations.

They can be towed by another implement of agriculture or a registered motor vehicle.
It is important to ensure that implements are road worthy and transported in a safe manner.

Inspection
Prior to transporting a towed implement of agriculture, it is important to inspect:
  • Safety chains/hitch pins/hitches.
  • Tires.
  • Lights.
  • Slow-moving vehicle (SMV) sign.
  • Markings.
  • Frame condition.
  • Poly tank condition (if applicable).
  • Hoses, and connections (if applicable).
  • Lights (if applicable).

SMV Emblem
Implements of agriculture designed for operations at lower speeds are required to display a triangular slow moving vehicle emblem (SMV). Towing implements with an SMV emblem requires that the speed does not exceed 25 miles per hour in most states. Check with your state for SMV speed requirements.

Damaged or faded SMV emblems should be replaced prior to towing implements on a public roadway. Some states now require that SMV signs have a retroreflective boarder that illuminates in darkness when struck by oncoming headlights. This is in addition to the fluorescent orange center.
Travel
Avoid running equipment on highways during high traffic periods, inclement weather, and after dark. Implements of agriculture should never be transported on interstate highways. To alert motorists of the slow-moving vehicle, consider making sure your hazard lights are on, display an SMV emblem, and if possible, have a pilot car accompany you with their hazard lights on as well.

Consistently check your mirrors to evaluate traffic behind you. If significant traffic builds up behind you, pull off at the next area and allow the traffic to pass before proceeding to your destination.

Safety doesn’t have to be difficult, simple steps, such as inspecting implements of agriculture can prevent over the road incidents that can result in vehicle damage, injury, and death.
